I admit the first half of the book is slower than a snail. You, as the witness, have to uncover the real connection. She barely knows anybody in the family, but she has blood relations with them. The book stars a female character driven into a new world she has never known, yet she is connected to it. Due to her tough circumstances, Hal was driven to the rich Westaways’ world. Not one of those over-the-top movies where the antagonist is batsh*t crazy. Ruth Ware’s world of Hal and the Westaways reminds me of a Lifetime movie. THE BOOK IS A LIFETIME MOVIE How I imagine Mrs. What if the will can solve her financial issues? Hal makes the final decision and attends the funeral unknowingly falling into a web of dark secrets her newly-discovered family holds. Her fortune-telling business doesn’t hold much to support her finances. Hal barely has money to buy herself lunch on a daily basis. Things turn for the worst when a creepy man threatens her life over money she owes. Perhaps they got the wrong woman with the same name. Not only that, she’s part of the woman’s will. Hal believes it’s all a mistake. Suddenly, her whole world changes with one letter summoning her presence at a wealthy matriarch’s funeral. Her father left her life a long time ago. Hal had no clue she had any relatives besides her deceased mother.

While it is not a novel that will necessarily stick with me, it is definitely one I enjoyed reading. However, I couldn’t help but feel that there was something missing in terms of the story and the way everything concludes left me underwhelmed. The most notable aspect of the novel by far is the eerie and unsettling atmosphere that the author creates, which was really well done. Hal is a sympathetic character and I cared about what would happen with her, so there was a connection I felt to the story throughout.

I can’t say that this novel wowed me in any way, but I really enjoyed reading it. It sounded like just my kind of mystery, and even though I had not enjoyed the one other Ruth Ware book I had read previously ( I had really strong feelings about The Woman in Cabin 10), I thought that this one was worth a shot. It becomes clear that there are deeply buried secrets and something sinister at the centre of this inheritance.

Westaway, and as the supposed long lost granddaughter, she is surrounded by a cast of characters that comprise her long lost family. All too soon she finds herself at the funeral of Mrs. Her skills at reading people make her a person who just may pull this off, and get away with an inheritance that would change her life and provide security she hasn’t felt in a long time. But her financial situation and current dangerous circumstances leads her to reconsider ignoring the summons. When Hal receives an unexpected letter stating that she is set to receive an inheritance, she realizes very quickly that there has been a mistake.
